I clicked “submit” on my Genesis entries this last weekend. And the wait begins…

Doesn’t it seem, as writers, that we’re always waiting on SOMETHING? Contest results (raising hand,) agent reply to query/full (raising hand,) myself to finish current manuscript/edits (raising hand,) Pub board (pointing to Katie,) first book to release (pointing to Jody,) First good/bad review on book (I’m sure there is someone waiting on that.)

There are a TON of things to wait on.

So, what, pray tell, do we do while we wait?

Here’s a few suggestions to try:

  • Write another book (except when you’re waiting on yourself to finish current one, ha!)
  • Eat some chocolate
  • Write another book
  • Get a pedicure
  • Write another book
  • Rearrange your office
  • Write another book
  • Brainstorm other book ideas
  • Turn one of those “ideas” into an actual book
  • Bite your nails
  • Write another book
  • Go get a manicure to fix your nails
  • Write another book
  • Spend some rare, quality, non-book interrupted time with hubby/kids/yourself
  • But not too long… cause you need to write another book!
  • Pray hard! (I really should be repeating this one a billion times too!
  • Write another book
  • Read a few books for *gasp* pleasure!
  • WRITE ANOTHER BOOK!!!

Discussion: So what are other things that YOU do while you wait?

  1. Hmm… what are you trying to say here?! *laughs* Aww waiting, I find it so funny considering I'm so impatient, guess the writer in me wins this round!! Ready to hit the ground running on finishing my first draft! Thanks for the pick me up!

  2. While on submission, it was really helpful for me to think through the eventual marketing of my book. I learned a lot, I pushed myself to study my book as a product, and I showed interested editors that I'd done my homework.

  3. 🙂 Great list!

    What do I do?

    Write another book. 🙂

  4. Congrats on submitting your entry, Krista. Here's to great feedback. In the meantime, I hope you're able to put the contest out of your mind and concentrate on another project.

  5. Hi Krista –

Great list. I didn't see anything there about waiting for Baby #4 to arrive, but I guess that's a given. 🙂

At the beginning of the year, I set goals for myself. While waiting for contest results, I'm working on re-formatting and editing, "The Moses Conspiracy." After that's done, I'll either edit Book Two or continue the first draft for Book Three.

    Blessings,
    Susan 🙂

  6. Definitely write another book. It's the only way to get through the waiting game.

  7. What do I do while waiting? Spend time with my family & do some crafting.

  8. WRITE another book!!!! It's always the love and hope we place in the next story that makes the current wait more bearable! 🙂

  9. How fun!! "Waiting" by Ha Jin, a Chinese novelist, captures how I feel about the process. It is such an organic part of life, though, so I gotta accept it!

Congratulations on that giant step forward. I am so proud of your spirit of improvement, of the process in God's will and not just the accolades!

    You rock!!

  10. I was thinking to finish the current book…and write another one. I know I'm in the minority here…
